Getting interviewed is probably one the best ways to evaluate what you’ve accomplished so far in your life. You get asked about so many parts of your life including past work, education, any passions or projects you have taken part in, community involvement and sometimes a few personal questions. It can tell you a lot about yourself. You also tend to notice typos a lot more, especially when it’s your online alias. lol.
Most importantly it can help you decided what you are doing right, doing wrong and where you want to be the next time it happens.
Here are a few things I learned about myself from my interview with Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.
1. I’ve been getting a lot of things done. That’s a darn good thing in my book. – Sometimes I feel like I could be doing more, but I know I don’t need to overwhelm myself too much. Based on this interview I have just the right amount of personal projects mixed in with my day job. The fact that I retained my new job for over a year already confirms that I am committed. If my current job status doesn’t improve within five years or so I might need to evaluate my goals and see where I can head. If you aren’t moving up you are more likely to fall back.
2. I learn a ton from all the things that I do both on a professional level and a personal level. – When I try new things and experience unfamiliar situations at work I can apply them to just about everything I do. Personal projects benefit greatly from this. The same is true in the reverse. Just about everything I do provides knowledge for me to not only myself, but over the past few years I am learning how I can help others. That is something I have had on my mind since 2011. How can I help people be more successful and live a more content life? After reading my answers in the interview I could see I have been doing just that and sometimes I don’t even realize it.
3. I have a ton of work to do. – I have been busy so that means a few things. First off, I have to stay busy. I have to keep doing what I am doing because it seems to be working. Staying committed to the things I have started is very important and I can’t give up now just because it’s now printed on paper. Second, I have to improve myself and work even harder to reach the goals I have both in my head and on my heart. I know what I want to do this next year, but I have to make sure it’s something I am passionate about and not just something to fill the void.
It was an honor to be interviewed for the alumni magazine and it’s a testament to my life so far.
As humble as I try to be, I should be really proud of this. My friend, Chad, told me this last night. “Dude. You should be so proud of that.” He is so right. I really should be. This is a big reminder to celebrate all I have done. It is also a reminder to keep my head high all the time even in the tough times.
Sometimes we can feel like consistent, hard and great work doesn’t get the attention it deserves, but eventually recognition goes where it needs to be. Hopefully someday it will come to you.
I have a pretty good feeling that with my current job, building up the pressgram community, my Fragments Project, and everything else I am working on that I will be ready to go for my next interview. This feeling of confidence in what I am doing is a great way to end this year.
