I find myself wanting to talk about music and share it with others here on the blog, so this is the beginning of me talking a little more in depth about bands, songs and albums I love. I look forward to sharing the music that I fill my days with in hopes that you will enjoy it as much as I do.
Before I begin talking about the album Stranger by Balmorhea you should hit play on the video below and give the song Masollan a listen while you read the rest.
Masollan has to be my favorite song from this album by Balmorhea. It has a subtle beginning that drives into a energetic field of joy. The rhythm and melodies give you this amazing feeling when you listen to it. Every time I hear Masollan feel like I have a purpose in life. That’s probably the best way to describe the way it makes me feel. The song portrays joy, confidence and compassion.
Call me crazy, but I hope you feel the same way when you listen to Masollan.
The rest of the album is very moving. I love all the work that Balmorhea has done, but the album, Stranger, reaches out to me the most when I listen to it. I love the way the guitars, strings, drums and bass work so well together. Each musician in this group really understands dynamics and placement for each song. You don’t always need guitar. You don’t always need drums. You don’t always need strings. It’s well balanced music that sounds beautiful.
This group of people has a very special magic when they write together. That feeling through other musicians is hard to find. It’s something I seek for in my lifetime.
My second favorite song on this album would have to be Dived. You can give it a listen to a live set below.
Even in their live sets they bring great energy to their compositions. The song Dived is a very fast paced song compared to the rest of this album. It is very much in your face with a strong piano and bass progression backed with call and response to the strings. I love the crap out of this song. I just love listening to it in my car or at work. Much like Masollan it brings me great joy when I listen.
I encourage you to give this entire album a listen. Check out the rest of their music too. Each album by them is a bit similar, but unique in their own ways.
