The story behind the Team Narwhal design.
You might be wondering why I would want to make a random team shirt that celebrates the Narwhal. Why isn’t there a bear or team Kinetic Bear? The story of Team Narwhal is one built on a great friendship. One that was brought together through a mutual love of writing music.
I met my friend, Sam Piper, in 2007 in the middle of a Walmart parking lot in Marinette, Wisconsin (now an abandoned building). It was a strange meeting of sorts. We orginally connected through myspace. Both of our bands were conversing about playing a show and he and his band were looking for a place to play on the eastern side of Wisconsin. We booked a show and I offered he and his bandmates a place to stay (my parent’s house) while they were in town.
This was an entire group of guys that I had never met in my life. Letting them stay in my home was a risk, but I had a good feeling about these guys.
The night before the show, their car wouldn’t start. We ended up pushing their car about a mile or so down the road, even across an interstate highway, to get it to a repair shop. Luckily they got it fixed so they could be on their way.
They were forever grateful. Over the years our frienships have grown despite the distance. They still live 3 hours away in La Crosse, Wisconsin. I still keep in touch with Sam, Tim, and Danny from that band. They new have a new band called Borders. You should check them out. Seriously.
Over the years Sam and I have gone down our own paths. I have been focused on video production and photography while he has been focused on music, guitars and creating great tone through guitar pedals and most recently his own guitar amp prototypes.
When I heard about his ambitions I knew I had to be a part of it and help him out. I offered up a few ideas based on what he was looking for and we clicked from a creative perspective.
This is where the Narwhal came into play.
One of his first amp models he is designing will be called “The Narwhal” and I had the pleasure of being able to play through the prototype this weekend. It is already sounding like an amazing product and it’s not even finished yet. He is working on a few other models as well and I’m so honored to be a part of the branding and marketing process for him.
In early October I was creating some designs for him and his amps. I decided to have some fun with them and made this shirt design based off of the designs I was messing with.
Team Narwhal just felt so right. Sam was more than glad to let me submit this design to Cotton Bureau. I’m ecstatic that they accepted it and are willing to move forward!
I would love for you to join Team Narwhal once the shirt is ready for sale over at Cotton Bureau. I will update you as soon as I know more details.
