It’s funny how we become so attached to our computers, our phones, and just being “connected” in general. We seem to form a “digital relationship” as the digital world becomes more prominent in our lives. Some of us invest into it more than others and for me it has been more rewarding than I will ever know. For me life has been quite the roller coaster and I think it’s like that for just every one. We all have a different path to take, so sometimes it’s hard to take advice from some one in a different field, a different country or even some one that is younger than us. It’s not that we don’t want the advice, we just don’t feel like it applies to us and at times, that is true.
I am kind of a success story when it comes to social networking and jump starting my career right out of school. I put in the time, the effort, and made the content necessary to get noticed by a lot of different people. Yeah I wanted to do it for self promotion and find some sort of security in work, but for some reason, as my skills progressed my friendships progressed as well. I have met some of the greatest people by sharing my work through social media and it even landed me my current job. I had a teacher from my first semester of school that always kept in touch with me whether it was passing by at school, talking at the grocery store or other random encounters, every time I saw him he commented on my work that I had posted online and asked if I was up to anything new. He was a true fan of my work. He was also the same person that messaged me one day on Facebook and asked if I was looking for a job. I was slightly hesitant just because I had no idea it would be, but I thought to myself “what the heck, what do I have to lose?” It was the best decision I ever made because I got the job and I still love it to this day, maybe because I get to wear my uniforms that I ordered from Total Image Group everyday.
When it comes down to it, social networks are an amazing place to make connections, keep them, and strengthen them, but they are not always fit for all career paths. For my line of work, it was perfect. Social networks are designed for sharing information, sharing content, and engaging with others. When your career involves dealing with individuals on more confidential level, such as a career in a psychological profession, you can’t really share what you do at work with the world online.
For some of us social networks can create a career and for others it can destroy it. It is up to us to be responsible with what we share and where we want to go.
