Fences keep us safe. They also hold us back.
We all have fences in our lives. The most common ones we see are right on our backyards. I am not talking about the one that lines your lawn, but the one that lines your head and your heart. Fences keep us from putting ourselves in danger. From making stupid decisions. There is nothing wrong with giving ourselves boundaries in life. They keep our lives intact so we don’t fall apart.
Boundaries need to be crossed now and then.
We arrive at times in our life where the fences need to be hurdled. We have to do things outside of our usual to reach for something. Sometimes we have to make sacrifices and sometimes we don’t do it on purpose, it just happens. Our own motivation moves us forward and over obstacles to reach a goal. It’s like something takes over and we don’t even realize what even happened until it’s over. It’s a pretty awesome feeling. I think a great example of this is when we go out on a limb for others. When we give and give and give because we just care. We care a ton about someone else. It doesn’t matter what happens to us, because we just want to help them.
We have to be well in order to do well.
There is a metaphor I like to use time and time again with others. “If you are an empty glass, you can’t expect to be able to fill the glass of others.” It doesn’t matter how much you want to give, there is nothing to give because you are empty. Many of us forget to take care of ourselves. It is so important to have a healthy heart, healthy mind, and healthy soul. So I encourage you to take the time to keep yourself well, so that you can help others when they need it most.
Ways to Keep Your Glass Filled:
- Take a break. We all need down time to relax and remove stress.
- Go for a walk with a friend. Just talking about life can be really good for just about anyone. It gets your body moving too.
- Get enough sleep. It doesn’t always seem easy too, but it makes a huge difference in energy levels and cures a lot of other things too.
- Ask for help. We can’t hold things inside forever. It’s good to ask for help when you need it. Get it off of your chest.
- Do something you enjoy. Having time for passions and hobbies keeps us happy. Creativity and happiness are an unbeatable combo.
