It’s been an interesting and wonderful year. It’s crazy to think that 2015 is less than one month away already. I mean really, where the hell did 2014 go? I’ve learned a lot about myself despite how much I like to think I know. I bet you have too.
This time of year we tend to start thinking about new goals and reflect on the old ones. The year end is a great moment for analyzing ourselves, but at the same time we shouldn’t let it define us. Our defining moments are never based on any other timeline than our own. We have the ability to set goals and start new project any time of the year. The yearly calendar just happens to make it more convenient.
Never let the calendar define what you are capable of. Time is not a measure of your will.
When you start to think about this coming year or even the goals of the current one, don’t let a 365 day timeline be the end. Just let it be a part of it. Great things can happen in a year, but wonderful things happen in a lifetime. What we did and what we expected are usually never the same. You are not alone in that. Be grateful for what you did and keep reaching for what you expect because sometimes we exceed our expectations and that’s a great thing to celebrate.
What have you been up to in 2014? I’d love to hear about it! Plans for 2015 already? Drop a comment and let’s chat. Or shoot me an email to have a deeper discussion.
2014 was all over the place for me. Here is what I’ve been up to.
I published over 365 blog posts between January and September 2014. It was a ton of writing. It was overwhelming at times. The coolest part about it was that I proved that I could do it. My original goal was 500 in 12 months, but I decided to slow down and be happy with how much I had published to my blog already. Not to mention I wrote a 90 page book in the first half of the year as well.
It’s still weird to tell people I wrote a book. I mean c’mon… seriously? I feel weird saying that still.
At work I’ve been focusing more on motion graphic work, which has been a fun experience for me and my entire team. The growth and collaboration has been great. I’ve even been working on my voice over skills. Beyond doing voicework for business development videos, I am now officially “the voice” of my employer for radio ads which is used for recruitment. I’ve had many friends come across my “lovely” voice on pandora radio. Haha. Curious? You can hear one here.
I have even been continiously working on music projects that I’m very excited to share in 2015. Music is something very important to me. I may not play live shows, but composing new songs gives my heart a new beat of excitement and always lifts me up. Music definitely has more of my focus this winter.
Adobe illustrator has been a fun new exploration for me as I develop my animation skills and even my design skills in general. It has been fun to help out friends with projects they are working on and help them accelerate their success. The best kind of growth we can receive is when we give for the sake of others. It’s a philosophy I have used successfully in my young career and it hasn’t proven me wrong yet.
My most recent new craft has been roasting my own coffee beans. I’ve been doing it “old school” just in pot that I shake for a good 15 minutes over heat. It’s been a really cool process to learn. I hope to share some of that with you over the winter as I learn more about the science of roasting.
After a great year of growth, in 2015 my focus will be writing and producing music, enhancing my design and animation skills and go where my heart takes me with my writing. The rest of my time will be invested in my family, my friends and my job. The details are on my mind, but they shift as life progresses. I’m also thinking of mentoring a student through an alumni program at NWTC in Green Bay.
