The title of this post is from a song by a band called, Artifex Pereo.
It really makes me think about growing up and living at home under the guidance of my parents versus what I am capable of doing now. I am no longer bound to a school schedule anymore, the standard of a child in an American society. When I was a kid I had to do what everyone else was doing, because that was normal. Now, I feel like that story is no longer a valid one. I don’t want to do what everyone else is doing.
Doesn’t that sound boring to you?
Why do what everyone else is doing? What will that really bring you?
More importantly, why do I have that option now? How can my options change me, my life, and everyone else around me.
Growing up we really had no choices to make. Choices were made for us by our parents and those who were in charge where ever we went. We could choose what we liked and did not like, but for the most part we had to stick to the plans. We were kind of forced with good intentions. Some of us more fortunate than others of course.
When you leave the guidance of parents and the education system, you are left to fend for yourself. You have nothing, but choices to make now. It’s scary as hell. It is also such a beautiful arrangement.
You have the ability to control where you can end up. The key word there is “can.” Just because you decide you want something and work hard for it doesn’t mean it will always happen the way you thought it would. You have the ability to change your path and adjust your life. You can choose to do something different than everyone else. There is greatness in achieving something on your own, despite challenges.
You have the choice to go your own way.
That’s pretty darn cool.
