Have you ever asked to be a part of something really cool?
Then when you decide to take part, a million ideas rush to your head. You want to do this idea, that idea and a ton of other things to make it even more awesome. You suddenly think you put yourself in a position to make choices that impact everyone in the group.
You go from being a part of it to leading it.
What happened? All of a sudden you feel like you own the damn project. What right do you have to feel that way?
You don’t. The only way you should feel like a leader of a project is if you are asked to do so. The only way you should make executive decisions if you are asked to do so by a leader already established.
It can be easy to think that our opinion and ideas matter to everyone just because they matter to us. The truth is that when we are asked to be a part of something, we first must be grateful that we were even asked. Second we must be willing to just listen and do what is requested of us. Not take the reigns and lead the project somewhere else.
We have to be willing follow others when we are asked to follow. Leadership has already been given.
It’s not easy for you, but greater for the group. Nothing worse than too many cooks in the kitchen.
